Uist News, Friday 30th January Another beautiful start to the day here on Uist today. It is forecast to remain the same for the rest of the day with temperatures of up to 7 degrees. We have seen quite a lot of birds on the beach behind the smokehouse this week. This morning there were several oystercatchers walking along the sand looking for cockles. To open the cockles, they pry them open, often consuming up to 500 cockles each day. There were also a few herring gulls busy searching for mussels amongst the rocks and seaweed. These smart birds can often be seen plucking a mussel from the rocks then flying up high to drop it back down on the rocks so that it will crack.
Miniature narcissus is just another name for a dwarf daffodil variety. Like regular-sized daffodils, they grow from fall planted bulbs and bloom in spring. The size of a dwarf daffodil depends on the variety, but generally they grow 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm.) tall with flowers that are just one and a half inches (4 cm.).
